Types of toll roads and systems
UAE uses Salik and DARB toll gates. Some routes are barrier-free with automatic plate recognition.
Rental cars may include a transponder or charge tolls later through the rental agreement.
How tolls are charged for rental cars
Charges may appear on your final invoice with a service fee. Ask at the desk whether a tag is pre-installed.
Keep rental paperwork showing toll policy to dispute incorrect charges.
Payment methods (cash, card, electronic tags)
Electronic tags are preferred on busy corridors. Cash lanes exist on some older routes but are less common.
Common toll routes for tourists
Airport-to-resort routes from Dubai Airport and inter-city highways are typical toll segments for visitors.

Fines and missed tolls
Missed payments trigger penalties plus admin fees from the rental company. Review statements after drop-off.
Tips to avoid extra costs
Confirm toll coverage at pickup, avoid unnecessary tag activation, and photograph return condition.
